Great Zimbabwe Hotel Sale: A Boost for Tourism and New Prospects for Travel Agents
Jason Bunabwa Fri, Mar 28, 2025
In a landmark move for Zimbabwe’s tourism sector, African Sun Limited (AfSun) has finalized the sale of the iconic Great Zimbabwe Hotel to the Mewame Family Trust for a total of US\$4.2 million. This strategic transaction, effective from April 1, 2025, is set to reshape the country’s hospitality landscape and unlock fresh opportunities for travel agents across Africa.
Revitalizing Heritage Tourism
The Great Zimbabwe Hotel, located near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Zimbabwe ruins, is a cornerstone of the country’s cultural tourism. The Mewame Family Trust plans to revamp the property, enhancing its facilities and services to attract a broader range of visitors. This investment is expected to elevate the hotel’s status as a gateway to one of Africa’s most significant historical landmarks, offering a more immersive experience for heritage and cultural tourism enthusiasts.
Economic and Industry Impacts
The sale is poised to bring multiple benefits to Zimbabwe’s tourism sector. The planned upgrades will likely create new jobs, boost local economies, and increase tourist spending in the region. Additionally, the transaction is expected to intensify competition in the hospitality market, encouraging higher service standards and innovation across the industry. For travel agents, this means access to improved offerings that can be packaged into attractive deals for both domestic and international clients.
Opportunities for Travel Agents
With the Great Zimbabwe Hotel set for transformation, travel agents have a unique chance to expand their portfolios. The revamped property will cater to diverse market segments, including domestic tourists, who currently account for 71% of AfSun’s room nights sold, as well as international travelers seeking authentic African experiences. The hotel’s proximity to the Great Zimbabwe ruins also makes it an ideal venue for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, opening doors for agents to target corporate clients and event organizers.
Agents can capitalize on this development by creating tailored packages that combine hotel stays with guided tours of the ruins, cultural experiences, and eco-friendly activities. Additionally, the growing demand for sustainable and boutique accommodations aligns perfectly with the expected upgrades, offering a competitive edge in the market.
Trends Supporting Growth
Zimbabwe’s tourism sector is on a strong recovery trajectory, with AfSun reporting a 24% year-over-year revenue growth in 2024. The rise in domestic tourism, coupled with increasing interest in heritage and MICE travel, underscores the sector’s potential. The government’s focus on infrastructure development and digital transformation further enhances the country’s appeal as a travel destination.
