Travel & Tour World Mon, Jan 27, 2025
As part of its strategic initiative to promote economic diversification, Botswana is positioning itself as a prime destination for hosting Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE). This vision was articulated by Vice President Slumber Tsogwane during his address at the 7th Africa Tourism Leadership Forum (ATLF) 2024, held in Gaborone.
The forum, themed “Charting a New Path Forward for Intra-Africa Travel, Tourism, and Investment,” attracted over 500 delegates and speakers from 43 countries across Africa. Tsogwane highlighted the significant role tourism plays in Botswana’s economy and its potential for further growth.
In 2019, tourism contributed 13.1% to Botswana’s gross domestic product (GDP) and accounted for 8.9% of jobs in the country. Tsogwane noted that international visitor spending injected P16.2 billion into the economy in 2023, with projections indicating an increase to P20.2 billion in 2024 and P31.3 billion by 2034. While domestic visitor spending was lower at P8.08 billion in 2023, it is also expected to rise, reaching P11.3
Diversifying Tourism Products and Experiences
Tsogwane underscored the importance of diversifying Botswana’s tourism offerings to maintain growth. He emphasized that the country’s tourism policy focuses on product development and diversification as key drivers for industry growth. Adventure and cultural tourism, alongside the traditional wildlife experiences, are now being promoted to attract a broader range of visitors from local, regional, and global markets.
Botswana is globally recognized for its authentic wilderness experiences, offering unique interactions with nature, heritage, and local lifestyles in a safe and accessible environment. The country has consistently hosted prestigious international conferences, including the US-Africa Business Summit 2023, FACETS 2023, and the International Association of Gaming Regulators Conference, further cementing its reputation as a leading destination for global events.
Empowering Local Communities through Tourism
Tsogwane also noted the importance of tourism in empowering local communities, creating employment opportunities, and providing a platform for their active participation in the industry. He praised the forum for emphasizing tourism as a central pillar in diversifying Africa’s economies.
Minister of Environment and Tourism, Nnaniki Makwinja, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging that hosting the forum for three consecutive years demonstrates the successful implementation of Botswana’s tourism policies. She highlighted the forum’s role in advancing Africa’s tourism recovery plan, which aims to protect and revitalize the industry while reigniting demand and strengthening the sector’s resilience.
Makwinja also emphasized the importance of facilitating investments in tourism to foster more inclusive and sustainable growth, especially in underdeveloped areas. The forum has yielded significant benefits for Botswana, including the expansion of local tourism operators into markets across Africa and beyond.
Promoting Sustainable Growth and Achieving Global Standards
The 7th African Tourism Leadership Forum and Awards provided a platform for celebrating the achievements of the tourism sector, aligning with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The event also featured master classes that focused on the upcoming investment phase, allowing businesses to develop networks and prepare to meet international standards.
Through these efforts, Botswana is steadily advancing its position as a premier global destination for tourism and MICE, while ensuring that tourism remains a catalyst for broader economic diversification.
